SMC Skype Wi-Fi Phone – Preview part III

Wish list

Here is our wish list for the final release SMC Skype Wi-Fi phone in US (or maybe in the next generation). According to our article: Overseas Source confirms WiFi Phone Shipment for Skype, all four Skype announced Wi-Fi phone (Netgear, SMC, Belkin, and EdgeCore) are using the same Accton’s design. Therefore, this wish list can be applied to all four different brand name Skype Wi-Fi phones.

Must have:

* Built-in web browsers – In order to connect to most HotSpots available in US, offering a built-in web browser is a must.

* Display Battery life during a conversation – A battery capacity bar shown on the screen during the talk time would be very helpful in avoiding sudden power outage.

Desired features:

* Desktop recharge cradle – Since the phone needs to be recharged every day, a desktop recharge cradle would ease the hassle in finding the AC adapter each time and help reduce cable clutter. See the picture of the Edgecore’s Skype Wi-Fi phone desktop recharge cradle. We hope the phones from all four vendors can come with a cradle like this.

* Carrying pouch / accessory – This phone is designed for people on the move. We wish we can find a carrying pouch to protect and easily take this phone with us.

* Car charger / accessory – Again, this phone is for people on the move. A way to charge the phone in the car would be a big help.

* Longer battery life (48 Hrs standby time, 6~8 Hrs talk time) – We hope the phone can match the basic battery capacity standard of a cell phone.

* Portable battery / emergency charge accessory – If the Wi-Fi transmitter power consumption cannot be improved in the near future, a portable battery or emergency charge accessory is needed.

* Bluetooth enabled – If we can use a Bluetooth headset with the phone, it would be easier to move around. However, we also know that Bluetooth technology is another power hog, too.

I agree with all the suggestions. My phone sits connected to the charger the whole day, so a cradle charger would be great. I’m disappointed with the battery life – my phone starts complaining of low battery after about 10 minutes of talk time.

As a frequent traveller, and company owner, this phone is invaluable. Travelling from hotspot to hotspot may prove difficult, given the lack of a browser, but, in all honesty, who cares? You know the limitations of Skype, and, if you want to be totally mobile, then you can always plug a headset, or USB phone, into your laptop and talk that way.

This telephone makes life easier when I am onsite with customers, or out of the country. I have three Skype In numbers, in three different countries, that all route to the same place. If the phone is out of range then I can forward all of my incoming calls to another number, either mobile or landline, that is close by. This is all at a minimum cost to myself and at a local country call to those calling me.

One of the most outstanding features is the ability to hold a long conversation. Knowing the limits of the battery just enables one to better prepare for recharging on the go. The USB charge cable is perfect, and, as all laptops have USB ports these days, doesn’t prove a challenge in finding somewhere to connect. However, you do not need to have a laptop with you at all times. There are mains adapters that have USB sockets on them, and they work just fine.

The international aspect of Skype, combined with the phone, are wonderful. Yes, the phone is in its early days, and there are some “features” that need to be ironed out, but, overall, it meets with my expectations. I cannot use it at an airport, but, who cares really? A calling card is dirt cheap and if it’s an incoming call that I’m waiting for, then Skype diverts to my mobile.

I am personally looking forward to an updated firmware, but, this solution is working for me.

I have been using this phone for 2 months sailing in the Caribbean. I use it for work and personal. Overall it is a great tool. We were in a small island and needed to make a local call and the payphones were all broken. Then I realized we were outside a cafe with free wifi and the phone was in my pocket. Walla!

I also use it as a hotspot finder on our boat. We wander an anchorage watching the smc phone. if I ses something, I can go below and check via the computer and a high power wifi access point.

The main issues are the ring tone level and keypad delay. The ring tone is very low on the highest setting and thus we miss calls due to not hearing the ring. The keypad delay has gotten very bad… sometimes as much as 10 secs to get it rolling out of some form of sleep.. display is on, but does not react for 2-10 secs.
